What may be less well known is that Freo is also home to some of WA’s most stunning beaches, boasting an idyllic coastline that would serve as inspiration for many. Whether you prefer the lively beaches of South Freo or the more relaxed beaches to the north, you’re bound to find a stretch of white sand waiting with your name on it. Grab your fish and chips and settle in for a sunset show like no other. South Beach, Ocean DriveSouth Beach is a popular choice for the young'uns and families alike, set along the Fremantle bike trail and conveniently a stone’s throw away from the buzzing South Terrace strip of modern eateries. In its previous reincarnations, South Beach was once used as a training ground for racing horses, and a holiday destination in its own right with a fairground and concert hall—the ‘Hydrodome’—located on the foreshore. Nowadays, it’s the buoyant atmosphere, warm pristine waters of the vast Indian Ocean and unbeatable views of Rottnest, Carnac and Garden islands that attract multitudes of colourful beach umbrella–toting beachgoers and keen SUP riders to its shores. Shady Norfolk Island pines provide relief during scorching hot summer days, and grassy lawns and BBQ facilities invite beach dwellers to bring along packed picnics or the ingredients of a traditional Aussie BBQ affair. Alternatively, simply head down on one of the nights when the food trucks are out in full throttle (South Beach Sunset Markets every Sat 5-9 pm). As in the past, South Beach is still all about the good times—come one, come all. ...you're bound to find a stretch of sand with your name on it... Bathers Beach, Mews RoadA short stroll away from the main hub of Fremantle, popular inner-city Bathers Beach is all about the unveil. Walk up the wooden promenade, take in the smell of freshly cooked fish and chips wafting out of Sweetlips, pass the sandy beachgoers outside Bathers Beach House (recently granted Australia's very first beach al fresco licence) and then take time to admire the striking Kidogo Arthouse and the colourful changing sheds beside it. As you reach the end of the promenade, the Bathers Beach shoreline slowly comes into view, the sun glinting off the shimmering waters and the tops of the many moored yachts visible past the rocky groyne—pause for a moment to take it all in. Bathers Beach is relaxed and intimate, an ideal place to share a sandy dune with some seagulls and watch the majestic glowing fireball in the sky as it dips over the Indian Ocean. Nostalgia pervades the salty air—this is the place to release your inner child and merrily dangle your legs off the boardwalk, before exploring the heritage Round House nearby and perhaps brushing up on your naval history in the Maritime Museum Precinct. ...this is the place to release your inner child and merrily dangle your legs off the boardwalk...
