Experience Artist Open House Fremantle

Artist Open House Fremantle (AOHF) is an annual Fremantle event that connects people who are interested in art (and perhaps looking to buy artwork) directly with artists. It’s a lively and inspiring short walking trail starting at Ginger Morris on South Terrace finishing in King William Street–just down from The Local Hotel. Along the way you’ll meander through quirky streets and visit lovely private homes in South Fremantle that have opened their doors for the weekend 11-13 November. On show are quality, professionally hung artworks from 24 local and interstate artists including Theo Koning, Tony Jones, Becky Blair and Alessandra Rossi. AOHF was founded following the decline of Perth art spaces which resulted in many artists being without a venue to exhibit their work and unable to connect with a market. Some also lacked knowledge and skills to market their work. Artists are selected to be part of AOHF through an application process with a curatorial panel whittling down the selection based on artistic merit, commercial viability, price point and diversity of the show as a whole. This year artist Abdul-Rahman Abdullah was guest curator. AOHF aims to expose the work of artists to a new and diverse audience, similar to a gallery. Having 4000 people see your work in one weekend is every artist’s dream! But in every other way AOHF is different from a gallery. Most artists are onsite to chat with buyers, the audience and other artists. Many get commissions for work after the event. Ceramicist Dale Frances for example, designed and supplied ceramics for every room of the new Alex Hotel after meeting the hotelier at AOHF. The open house weekend is a more relaxed, festive environment than a gallery and the homes are lively with conversation. Visitors also embrace the idea of seeing art in a home, getting a feel for the scale of artworks, how art can be hung and styled, as well as the confidence to mimic a look in their own home. For lesser-known artists, it is a terrific opportunity to raise their profile and the public certainly enjoys chatting with artists, learning about their techniques or the inspiration behind a piece.Since AOHF is a walking trail, many visitors make a ‘weekend of it’ and the vibe on the streets is undeniable. Family and friends bump into each other, kids run cake stalls, grandparents, students, professionals and young couples come from all over Perth. Artist Open House Fremantle is on from 11-13 November 2016. Pick up a copy of your event guide at one of the homes (soon to be in shops and cafes) or download a copy here. Entry is $5 per person, payable at the first home or pre-register online. You can catch the free blue CAT bus that leaves from Fremantle CBD every 10 minutes–hop off at Wardle Street stop # 9.
