Overview

Warakurna artist Eunice Porter Yunurupa says, “We’re painting about our country, our home. About the places we go hunting, and where we were born. These places are like paradise to us.”

Gallery1 exhibition features work from Warakurna community located near the Rawlinson Ranges on Ngaanyatjarra lands in Western Australia, close to the Northern Territory border.

For these artists the role of the art centre is to contribute to cultural maintenance. They want to ensure that traditional practices and culture are kept alive and strong. This provides an avenue for educating younger people through stories and paintings, passing down important Tjukurrpa and culture. Warakurna art centre opened in 2005 and now provides art support for artists at communities of Wanarn and Patjarr.

The exhibition along with work by Artists of Ampilatwatja is on display at Japingka Gallery from 23 March to 16 May and the gallery is open daily but closes on public holidays.
