Fremantle Ports Maritime Day returns for 2016. It's a fabulous free day out for families with a host of new features and exhibitions as well as familiar favourites from past years including the much loved Fremantle Harbour Classic yacht race in the harbour at 1pm.
Action takes place throughout Victoria Quay, inside historic B Shed and on the water. Maritime Day is a fun-filled day for all ages, with an emphasis on information about the port, the maritime industry and maritime careers.
New features this year include a visit from the Royal Australian Navy submarine, HMAS Sheean, berthing at Victoria Quay for the day. A performance from Taiko On, Japanese percussion ensemble. David Giles and the Freedom School of Art will be artists in residence.
For the kids there will be maritime dress up and fancy dress competition, art workshops, facepainting and a full program of entertainment from local schools. The Fremantle Sailing Club’s Pipes and Drums will be playing along with quayside marching displays.
Local historian and storyteller Mike Lefroy will guide a fascinating 40-minute walking tour. The sail Training Ship Leeuwin, the Duyfken replica and a Svitzer tug will be open for visiting with free boat rides on the harbour on offer, courtesy of South Metropolitan TAFE and the TAMs Group.
Austal will display a number of scale models of ships the Henderson-based company has built and continues to build in Australia and around the world.
Entry to the Western Australian Maritime Museum will be gold coin on the day and there will be a cook off between the Royal Australian Navy and Fremantle Ports with delicious food available for a gold coin donation to charity.
There's plenty more happening throughout the day. Come down and take the opportunity to explore Victoria Quay.
