Overview

The eyes of the Commonwealth will be on Fremantle as the baton journeys towards its final destination, the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) Opening Ceremony on Wednesday 4 April 2018.

Setting off in Australia on Monday 25 December 2017, the Baton will travel for 100 days to connect with as many people as possible in every state and territory.

The Queen’s Baton carries a message from Her Majesty The Queen through the entire Commonwealth. The Games are declared officially open when the message is read aloud.

The Baton will arrive in Fremantle by sea from Bathers Bay onto Bathers Beach before it sets off through the streets of Fremantle. Join Mayor Brad Pettitt on the boardwalk at Bathers Beach to mark this momentous occasion with a traditional Welcome to Country and live music.

  • 11:30am until 1:00pm – A free community celebration will take place at Bathers Beach including a Welcome to Country, live music from The Lost Quays and interviews with some of the baton bearers.
  • 12:45pm – Arrival of the baton from Rottnest at Bather’s Beach
  • 1:00pm to 2:30pm – The baton will leave Bathers Beach and travel through the streets of Fremantle carried by the baton bearers, through Norfolk Street, South Terrace, High Street, Cliff Street, Phillimore Street, ending at Princess May Park on Adelaide Street. Road closures in Fremantle on Saturday 24th February, 2018:

  • Mews Road will be closed to traffic between 12:30 and 1:30pm
  • South Terrace and intersecting streets including Norfolk Street, Norfolk Lane, Essex Street, Collie Street, Nairn Street and Bannister Street will be closed to traffic between 1:00 and 2:00pm
  • High Street, Phillimore Street and intersecting streets including Packenham Street, Henry Street, Mouat Street and Cliff Street will be closed to traffic between 1:30 and 2:30pm
  • Traffic management will be in place to direct traffic on Queen and Adelaide Streets between 2:00 and 2:30pm
  • The Phillimore Street entrance to Fremantle Port will be closed between 1:00pm and 2:30pm, however all port traffic including ferry passengers, will still be able to access the port via gate 2 on Beach Street (near Officeworks) along Peter Hughes Drive during this time.

Carpark closures in Fremantle on Saturday 24th February, 2018:

  • Carparks at the far end of Mews Road in front of Be.Serviced apartments will be closed from 6:00am to 2:00pm
  • All other carparks in Mews Road including 6 Molfetta Quays, 35 Mews Road, car parks on both sides of Kailis Fish Market, 34 Mews Road and 38 Mews Road will be closed from 1:00 – 2:00pm. Cars remaining in these car parks at the commencement of the road closures must remain parked for the duration of the closure.
  • Carpark 2 will be closed from 6:00am to 3:00pm

Little High Street and Captains Lane carparks in the West End will be closed from 1:00 to 2:00pm. Cars remaining in these car parks at the commencement of the road closures must remain parked for the duration of the closure.
